SBB exercises option for a further 14 Vossloh diesel locomotives

Swiss Rail (SBB) is continuing to revamp its vehicle fleet and has decided to purchase another fourteen Am 843 locomotives from Kiel-based Vossloh Locomotives GmbH. The deal is worth over €23 million.

In the summer of 2002, SBB had ordered 59 Mak 1700 eco-friendly locomotives from Vossloh, and delivery of the first series of this vehicle will be completed by summer 2005. The excellent performance of these locomotives in shunting, delivery and construction functions has prompted Swiss Rail to exercise an option for another 14 units. Fitted with soot particle filters and radio control, these diesel locomotives are scheduled for shipment by 2007 when they will go into service at SBB marshalling stations.

The Am 843 is considered Europe’s most eco-friendly diesel locomotive. Rated at 1,500 kW and with a top speed of 100 km/h, it excels at a wide variety of jobs.
