Vossloh is a true switch specialist – in addition to planning, construction, equipping, installation, and removal, Vossloh also handles all transportation tasks. Vossloh has a fleet of 19 special turnout transport wagons (WTW) for use throughout Europe to ensure optimal supply and disposal of turnouts at construction sites. The biggest challenge in track construction logistics is probably replacing a turnout. This makes factory-made, fully pre-assembled turnouts, which can be installed directly on site as a plug-and-play solution, so interesting.

Switches and logistics: Your one-stop shop!

Unlike most other service providers, Vossloh does not deliver individual parts to the construction site, but transports complete turnouts in segments on its own turnout transport wagons with inclined loading areas. Thanks to the unique plug-and-play process, no additional installation space is required away from the track – an added safety feature that requires even less installation effort. In fact, this innovative, time- and cost-efficient concept reduces installation time on the track by 30%. 

 

A track-mounted track-laying crane is used to unload and position the turnout correctly at its destination on the track. The high working speed of the self-propelled mega crane enables laying to be carried out five times faster than with conventional methods. At the same time, it also means less noise and emissions for residents. Of course, Vossloh also takes care of loading and returning old turnouts for reconditioning.

Portfolio for various turnout segments and sizes

Pre-assembled turnout segments can only be loaded onto standard flat cars in exceptional cases. In order to transport turnouts within the internationally varying clearance profiles, special transport wagons were developed whose loading platforms can be tilted to ensure safe transportation of the turnouts. All transportation vehicles are TSI-approved and equipped with GPS tracking. When loaded, they can be transported at a maximum speed of 100 km/h, making them suitable for integration into regular trains. 

Hamburg: Transport of pre-segmented turnouts

In July 2020, we transported five turnouts (3x R-1,200 and 2x R-300) to the construction site in Hamburg Harburg using 7 WTWs and 15 flat cars. Both the rail transport with a train length of 760 m and the unloading of a total of 1,374 bto went smoothly.
