Queensland Rail Approves Low-Carbon Concrete Sleepers

Product | News Queensland Rail Approves Low-Carbon Concrete Sleepers

Up to 35% Lower Embodied Carbon Through Sustainable Prestressing Steel

Queensland Rail has granted type approval for two low-carbon concrete sleeper designs developed by Vossloh Sleeper Technologies Australia. “Receiving type approval from Queensland Rail confirms that substantial carbon reductions can be achieved without compromising technical performance or compliance. By integrating sustainable prestressing steel, we are addressing the most carbon-intensive component of the sleeper and providing rail operators with a practical and scalable lower-emission infrastructure solution.”

The approval enables the use of prestressed concrete sleepers with up to 35% lower embodied carbon on Queensland Rail’s mainline network.

Reducing the carbon footprint of railway infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as rail operators and infrastructure managers pursue sustainability and decarbonization targets.

Sustainable Prestressing Steel Reduces CO₂ Emissions

The carbon reduction is achieved through the use of sustainably produced prestressing steel, manufactured using recycled material and low-emission production technologies.

Prestressing steel is the most carbon-intensive component of prestressed concrete sleepers, meaning that improvements in steel production significantly reduce the overall environmental impact of the sleeper.

Despite the reduced emissions, the sleepers maintain:

  • full compliance with Australian Standards
  • identical structural performance
  • proven durability for heavy-haul railway operations

Manufactured in Queensland

Both sleeper designs are produced at Vossloh’s Rockhampton facility in Queensland.

The sleepers can be manufactured within existing production processes, enabling scalable supply for future rail infrastructure programmes without changes to installation procedures.

Environmental Performance Verified

The environmental performance of the sleepers is documented through Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) registered with EPD Australasia.

The EPDs are prepared according to:

  • ISO 14025
  • EN 15804

and are based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology.

This provides transparent environmental data for infrastructure managers, railway operators and regulators.
